FOUNDATION GAMES TO DRAW YOUNG COMPETITORS
10 April 2007 - Track, Field and Earth Day to Draw Young Competitors Stan Roach remembered
ORANGE, CA, APRIL 10, 2007—On April 28, the Community Foundation of Orange (CFO) will host the Foundation Games, a daylong, family-friendly track meet beginning at 8 a.m. at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange. Participation in this Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) qualifying meet is open, free of charge, to elementary and middle school children born between 1992 and 2000 who reside or attend school in the Orange Unified School District.
“The Foundation Games, formerly Dash for Dare, was started in order to serve the children and their families in our community by bringing them a day of friendly competition. We encourage all kids to participate in this free event, made possible through our wonderful sponsors,” states Lisa Blanc, Foundation Secretary and Foundation Games Committee Co-Chair.
In addition to various races and field events, the Foundation Games will also feature the Stan Roach Parent Relay (formerly titled the Parent Relay), honoring Orange resident, and former YMCA Volunteer of the Year Stan Roach for his selfless dedication to the community. In the past, Roach organized a parent team from Serrano Elementary, which they went on to win. On Jan. 27, while fielding ground balls to his players at his son’s Little League practice in Villa Park, Roach collapsed and later died of heart failure.
“We are holding this Parent Relay to honor Stan Roach, who originated the idea last year at the Foundation Games,” said Villa Park High School acting Principal and Roach family friend Ed Howard. “We really want to honor him at this event that brings together the community he so loved.” In addition to the Parent Relay, bracelets and other items in remembrance of Stan will be fore sale, benefiting his wife and four children.
Students who meet the qualifications can register to participate in the Foundation Games until April 13. Contact the Foundation at (714) 288-9909, or visit www.communityfoundationoforange.org.
As part of the Foundation’s mission to enhance our sense of community, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are available for both individuals and businesses. Earth Day booths sponsored by the City of Orange will also be a part of the day’s excitement. The entire community is invited to attend this event free of charge.
Through the care and development of programs that meet a wide range of community needs, support families, build community, and promote healthy lifestyles for children, the Community Foundation of Orange is dedicated to improving Greater Orange. The Foundation, an independent non-profit organization, leads a passionate, unified effort to preserve and enhance our sense of community through financial and community partnerships.
